A friend reminded us recently that we have turned twenty. And so we counted the years, and indeed it has been two decades since Himal began, in May 1987. That was the start of our Himalayan phase, and it has been ten years since Himal went Southasian. During this period, some of us have gone from black to grey, others grey to silver. Thanks to all our readers and contributors for keeping us on track through the years! Says one ‘Himaler’: As Himal comes of age, all I can say is: Never give up – too much is at stake! Greetings have been pouring in, in response to an invite to an impromptu gathering on 26 July.

Magazines, journals and people do celebrate their successes, but some achieve success by selling themselves, by compromising and by neglecting the communities and humanity at large But Himal is a highly rated and widely respected journal for its standard and its commitment to human issues. South Asia, in particular, should be grateful to Himal and its team for bringing into mainstream the discourse on peace and human issues, in particular.
Syed Sikander Mehdi, Karachi

+++

Would have loved to be there to participate in your richly deserved celebrations. Sadly, the 26 hours' notice I got was a great challenge to the Southasian spirit, which I failed to rise to. 48 hours and I would definitely have made it!

I still remember those mono colour covers changing with each issue as if you intended to follow the rainbow cycle. red...blue...indigo...violet... I loved that cartoon / sketch of a man dosing off and it said - You can either laze around or read himal. As a 9th grader - I had cut it and placed it in my wallet. It would look great - in Royal Stag size right out of the Singha Durbar gate.

Hope, London

+++

Congrats - and lets get that marketing drive in overdrive!!!
Mita Hosali, New York

Like everybody else, I did not realize twenty years have passed since you first conceptualized Himal in your Manhattan apartment. I still remember you working late at night writing articles for the first issue (wasn’t there a demo or a pilot?) to meet the deadline. It was all environment and ecology then.. and look where Himal is now. It has become “one of the best magazines to come out of Southasia” (this was a Kentucky based Indian Professor’s compliment). And I believe it is. In twenty years time, an adolescent Himalayan Himal has grown into a mature, respectable Southasian Himal. That is quite a feat! I am proud to say that I am a Himaler.
Nirmal Niroula, Florida

Although I could not be there personally, I send my greetings for Himal’s 20th birthday, and hope there will be many more to come.

From distant Kolkata, I feel the mood you have. Braving the high infant mortality of magazines – that too in a very poor country, you deserve our thanks for setting a proud precedence. Your editor has a new feather on his cap with an armada of committed journos.
