Kashmir in focus
As twenty-three people were killed in police firings during protests following the death of Burhan Wani, the commander of the Kashmiri separatist group Hizbul Mujahideen, Kashmir has again come to the forefront of national and international media attention. Wani was killed in a security operation on July 8, along with two other militants. Kashmir remains tense and curfew has been imposed in most parts of the valley. Himal's archives provide an interesting insight into a region that has seen hostilities between Kashmiri people and the Indian state increase since 1947:
Anuradha Bhasin Jamwal on Kashmir's media story. (July 2014)
Praful Bidwai on killing fields of Kashmir (September 1994)
Feroz Rather on how India-administered Kashmir is haunted by violence and bound by the tension of memory (September 2015)
