Social Media Intern

Himal Southasian, a pioneering regional magazine of politics and culture, is looking for a Social Media Intern to join our remote editorial team for a three-month, full-time internship, with the possibility of extension by mutual agreement.

This role is ideal for early-career candidates interested in journalism, digital media, video, design and audience engagement, and who want hands-on experience working with a small, distributed editorial team.

Key Responsibilities

The intern will work closely with the Social Media Editor and the magazine’s engagement and editorial teams on day-to-day digital publishing and outreach. Responsibilities include:

• Assisting in the management of Himal’s social media accounts across Instagram, X (formerly Twitter), BlueSky, Facebook, Threads, LinkedIn, YouTube and WhatsApp channels.

• Editing short-form videos and clips for social media (including Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts and platform-specific edits) preferably using tools such as Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, CapCut, Canva or an equivalent video-editing software. Supporting the adaptation of long-form editorial content into platform-specific formats, including social posts, carousels, short videos and newsletters.

• Helping maintain a consistent publishing schedule and organising content assets across platforms.

• Assisting with basic performance tracking (reach, engagement, video views) and reporting insights to the engagement and editorial teams.

• Supporting digital outreach efforts, including sharing and amplifying Himal’s work across relevant networks and assisting with the design of social media creatives, posters or slides.

This is a learning-oriented role, and interns will be guided through workflows, editorial standards and platform strategies.

The ideal candidate

We are looking for candidates who:

• Are early-career students or recent graduates with an interest in media, journalism, communications, video or design.

• Have working familiarity with video editing software (professional or mobile-first tools are both acceptable).

• Have basic written and spoken English proficiency, and are comfortable adapting tone for different platforms. Show interest in Southasian affairs, journalism, culture and politics.

• Are comfortable working remotely, meeting deadlines, and collaborating with a small team.

• Have reliable internet access and are available for text, audio and video communication during working hours.

Prior experience (academic, freelance, internship or personal projects) in social media, video editing, design or publication-related work will be considered a plus, but is not mandatory. We encourage applications from across Southasia and particularly from candidates who may not have had access to traditional media internships.
