Despite doubts regarding the fairness of an electoral process commandeered by the military-backed Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) government, the opposition National League for Democracy (NLD) achieved a landslide victory. Though 25% of all parliament seats are occupied by unelected military representatives, the victory marked the end of the direct military rule.

Himal Southasian has collaborated with the Democratic Voice of Burma to put together this web-exclusive series that looks at this pivotal moment in Burmese politics.
