Healthcare crisis in Sri Lanka

With the economic crisis, shortages and increased prices of medicine are forcing patients to go without vital drugs and care

Thanuja is one of thousands of kidney patients in Sri Lanka who are struggling to continue their medical treatment because of a shortage of drugs and equipment in hospitals.

Sri Lanka relies on imports for 80 percent of its medical supplies and 85 percent of its drugs.

The ongoing economic crisis and depleting foreign reserves have worsened the shortage of medicines and medical equipment in state hospitals. There has also been a surge in the price of medicines.
