Another massive hydropower scheme is coining up in the Himalaya, this lime in Himachal Pradesh: the  Nathpa Jhakri Power  Project.
TOTAL COST:  U$1.8 billion
World Bank  loan,  U.$485   million;   U$300 million   from cofinanciers;   US1
biilion   from Government   of India,  Government   of Himachal  Pradesh,   and
Himachal Pradesh State Electricity  Board (HPSEB).
PROJECT OBJECTIVE:     Construction   of  1,500   MW Nathpa  Jhakrt
hydropower   station   on the   Sutlej  River  in   Himachal;   reinforcement   and
expansion of transmission   system  in Himachal;  provision  of communications
facilities  and a  load  dispatch   facility   for HPSEB;  implementation   of a
training  program  to strengthen   the  capabilities   of the  Central   Electricity
Authority, the Central  Water Commission,  and other government  institutions
in preparation,   design, and construction   supervision   of hydropower projects;
training and  consulting   services   for the implementation   of  the above
components.
ESTIMATED COMPLETING DATE:  1997
PROCUREMENT:   ICB  for  civil  works,  US724  million;   materials   and
equipment: US556.9 million.
CONSULTANTS:  Foreign ancJ  local consultants wili be required.  Consultants
should have experience   in projects  of similar   size and  design.  The main
disciplines required are: underground excavating; geo-technical engineering and
rock mechanics;   quality  control  of civil  works  and inspection   of critical
equipment;  electro mechanical   engineering;   general project  management  and
monitoring;   and claims  handling.   A lead project adviser  will be appointed
along with consultants for specialized services, as needed, and for training.
